Whenever
it is windy, all of the electricity is provided from our Proven 6 wind turbine. This 6KW small-scale
turbine is situated in one of our fields approximately 200m away from the property. The electricity is used for lighting low-energy bulbs and for heating the property. We make the
best of windy nights via a night-time storage heater! And
when we use more power than we can generate, we buy electricity from a green electricity supplier.
When it's really windy we sell excess to them!
The domestic hot water is heated from 3 roof mounted solar panels. These charge
a 350 litre thermal store which additionally has an electric immersion backup should we have the odd grey day.
We have extensively insulated the floors, walls and ceilings to standards
well above the current building regulations. All the double glazing units are Argon-filled "low-E".
It is the combination
of all the above, together with a pleasant southerly aspect, that allows the building to consume very little energy even during
the winter.
And
for those of you who like the comfort of a wood burning stove, we can provide (at no extra charge)
a supply of locally- sourced wood.
Finally,
our own eco-biological sewage treatment plant serves both the farmhouse
and the converted barn. By quietly pumping air into the below-ground storage tank, the growth of various
aerobic organisms biologically degrade the sewage contaminants. The final effluent released meets stringent standards set
by the Environment Agency.
We would be delighted
to collect you from Par mainline station if travelling by train and we are on a local bus route.
Recycling and composting facilities are
also provided.
